Clarke Co. – Gold in Your Garden II: Georgia Gold Medal Symposium
Wednesday, September 14, 2011.  State Botanical Garden of Georgia.
Featured speakers Rita Randolph, Coach Vince Dooley, Matthew Chappell, and SB Garden Director Wilf Nicholls and announcing the 2012 Georgia Gold Medal winners. Shop for gold medal plants at the plant sale (we’ll be happy to plant-sit them until the end of the symposium), or buy raffle tickets for a chance to win specimen plants, garden books or ornaments, and more. $40 Master Gardeners and Friends of the State Botanical Garden, $48 for others. Lunch included.

Clarke Co. - Ornamental Horticulture Research Field Day
Friday, October 7, 2011 at the UGA Horticulture Farm in Watkinsville, Georgia. Registration begins 8:30 a.m. and tours start promptly at 9:00 a.m. rain or shine.
Faculty will be stationed throughout the farm to discuss their research projects. This year, we will have 15 researchers presenting 12 research projects taking place at the farm. Topics will range from honey bee management to invasive species to organic vegetable production to new ornamental cultivars (and MANY more). An ‘after the show’ in-depth tour of pumpkin, veggie and organic trials will dig deeper into this research program for those who want to stick around after 2:00PM. Registration $25 per person. Lunch will be provided.

Clayton Co. MG’s Symposium-The Garden Symphony
Oct 29, 2011 9:00am – 4:00pm
Join us for a day of four interesting speakers (Jan Nauck of Andy’s Nursery on “What’s New, Tried and True?”, John Newsome, President of the North Georgia Camellia Society on “Camellias”; Brooks Garcia, principal designer of garden design firm “Fine Gardens” on “Design”, and Mike Francis of Maple Ridge Nursery on “Conifers”). Add homemade snacks, lunch, door prizes and vendors to the mix and it’ll be a great day!

Dekalb Co. – Georgia Naturalist Rally (EEA sponsored)
September 24, 2011 Confederate Hall Historical & Environmental Education Center, Stone Mountain Park, Stone Mountain, GA
The Environmental Education Alliance (EEA) of Georgia is pleased to hosta rally to bring together naturalists, environmental educators, scientists, explorers, and artists for a day of appreciation of the outdoors.  Registration allows access to over 20 sessions taught by naturalists, master gardeners, water experts, and professors.  This family-friendly event even includes a special track for kids (ages 5-15 years) and their parents.  Free milkweed plant to those who register by September 1! Admission: $20 for current EEA members.  $45 for non-members (includes 1-year EEA membership).  Optional $8 lunch and/or $8 dinner.

DeKalb Co. - 15th Annual Outdoor Learning Symposium (EEA sponsored)
October 21, 2011  Georgia Perimeter College, Decatur Campus.
The Outdoor Learning Council of the Environmental Education Alliance (EEA) of Georgia is pleased to host its 15th annual symposium.  This popular event offers hands-on training sessions, networking opportunities, resources, and informative exhibits provided by outdoor learning experts. Session descriptions are available online and registration is now open. One professional learning unit (1 PLU) is available to Georgia certified teachers. $85.00 for EEA members and $110.00 for non-members (includes 1-year EEA membership). Register early!  After October 7, rates increase by $10.

Gilmer Co. – Master Naturalist Program offered by Gilmer County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners starting Thursday September 8th and running every Thursday till October 27th. The class starts at 9 AM and runs till 4 PM. The cost of the class is $175. Henry Co. – Beekeeping Short Course
Learn about how to become a beekeeper. Most beekeepers are in it for the honey, although others maintain colonies of bees to pollinate crops, or for the beeswax, propolis, pollen or royal jelly.   But did you know it could be a Family Hobby?  Join us on Saturday, October 15th, 8:00 A.M., Public Safety Building Community Room, 116 Zack Hinton Parkway South, McDonough, Georgia, when the Henry County Beekeepers will host a Beekeeping Short Course. Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Green Island Country Club Columbus, GA.
$75 per person. Featured speaker Ben Page, award winning Landscape Architect of Nashville, TN specializing in residential design. Spalding Co. – : Gourdiful Creations: Decorating and Embellishing Gourds Workshop
Saturday September 17, 10 am – 1pm. University of Georgia Research and Education Garden, across from the UGA Griffin Campus 121 Ellis Road Griffin, GA 30223
$10 In this fun and educational workshop, each participant will learn fun techniques for embellishing dried gourds, including painting, embossing and woodburning, and make their own ‘gourdiful creation’ to take home. Class is limited to 15 participants.

RALEIGH, NC: Open Garden Days September 17&18 , Sat 9-5 & Sun 12-5. Five private gardens plus the JC Raulston Arboretum are open to benefit The Garden Conservancy. Admission to each participating private garden is $5 per person; children 12 and under are admitted free. Admission may be paid in cash or check. Tickets are not required to attend Open Days. Discounted tickets (6 for $25 for non-members, or 6 for $15 for Garden Conservancy members) in advance allow 7-10 days for processing and mailing. Open Days are rain or shine events and no reservations are required.

CHARLESTON, WV: 2011 International Master Gardener Conference: Color it Green in a Wild and Wonderful Way
October 11-14, 2011 Charleston, WV.
$300 Keynote speakers: Anna Caroline Ball, Joe Lamp’l and Rick Darke. Also, breakout sessions, featured speakers, plus pre, day, and post tours. Hosted by the West Virginia University Extension Service and WVU Master Gardeners.
