Our native azaleas are a wonderful group of plants that are underused in our gardens. With native azaleas, you can extend your garden season as some species bloom in June, July, or August. Some are fragrant with scents of lemon, clove, heliotrope, and rose. Planted in the right conditions, they are highly floriferous. They have few diseases and pest problems. The native azalea is the official Georgia state wildflower. Charles has been studying North American Azaleas in the field and literature for over 50 years. He writes and speaks on azalea topics and is currently writing a book on the history and characteristics of this complex but underused group of plants. Charles is the immediate past president of the Azalea Society of America. He is an active member and past president of the Azalea Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.
