The Light Eaters by Zoe Schlanger. One primary theme running through this book is the scientific community’s dispute about how to classify new evidence about plant communication and adaptability. Some are very uncomfortable about calling plant interactions a form of intelligence, but the scientific argument may actually come down to the limitations of language. Schlanger describes some of the astonishing things plants can do; she writes about scientists who are studying how plants change their shape and respond to sound, how they use electricity to convey information, and how they send one another chemical signals.
